While watching the series ‘V’ on television last night (and no this is not going to be an alien article) something hit me like a ton of bricks. In the show aliens come down to Earth and tell us Earthlings they want to help us and that they come in peace. The leader of the V’s is pretty smart and realizes that the Earthling media can help spread their message and get the people of Earth to trust them, while they carry out their plans unhindered by such things as resistance movements.
It struck me that I hadn’t heard anything about Wiki Leaks in a long time. A few months ago, the leaked cables were front and center in the media. Then there were calls for Assange’s assassination by some members of the U.S government and suddenly, the media largely stopped reporting about the leaks, despite Wiki Leaks saying they had cables about certain banks and even UFO information.
Why? Why isn’t the media reporting this stuff? Whether you agree or disagree with the leaking of the cables, the media’s job is to report the news. Is Weiner really more important than the cables that show that the U.S government knew that Saudi Arabia was one of the biggest financiers of terrorism, yet they supported them anyways? Are scandals about some celebrity doing another celebrity more important than the cables released that show our governments may be getting ready to fight a shadowy war over the resources found beneath the dwindling ice of the arctic?
I don’t think so. And yet, I hear almost nothing about these cables anymore. The best article I found on it was published in AlterNet.
In order for democracy to work, the citizens have to stay informed. It’s impossible to make voting choices if we’re ignorant. This is the biggest reason why our media is so important. The power of information is highlighted in countries like Tunisia, where the Wiki Leak cables clearly helped to create a revolution – one that has had a domino effect throughout the Middle East.
If the government can intimidate or buy out our media outlets they can control us. If our governments can spin our news or derail our freedom of speech, they can make the rules without worrying about what we (the voter) thinks.
I’m tired of seeing watered down crap masquerading as real news. There has to be some legitimate journalists left…right?
