It’s pretty difficult finding good supernatural shows. Most have cheesy effects and horrible storylines. But there are a few that have broken the mold and been successful. Here are some of my favorites.
I was seriously addicted to Buffy for a long while - right up to the musical episode that nearly made me vomit in my mouth. Still, Buffy is one of the most successful supernatural TV shows. I admit the first season was sort of childish, but as the seasons progressed, Buffy got increasingly darker…and better.
Angel was an offshoot of Buffy. Angel first appeared in Buffy as her vampire boyfriend. Hell, you can’t be a successful vampire hunter without dating one or two of them on the side. I liked Angel better than Buffy overall. It was darker, had some pretty good characters and a nice storyline.
Being Human was born in the UK. It’s about a werewolf, vampire and ghost shacking up as roommates. I’m watching this show now. The UK version is so much better than the US version on SyFy. It’s got an amazing storyline and unlike most monster shows, the show revolves around the characters and not their powers. Sure, you’ll get your fair share of werewolf, bone breaking changes and vampire teeth, but really the show is about the characters and their powers are secondary.
If you haven’t seen this show, I highly recommend it. It may turn out to be the best of the best. And the werewolf is my favorite character. The guy is freaking funny.
No supernatural TV show list would be complete without mentioning the X Files. The show ran for 9 seasons and really shook up the industry. It was probably the first TV show that got me hooked on the supernatural.
Doo do doo do…
Is there any other show that even compares to the Twilight Zone? It’s classic and to this day stands alone on the podium of the weird. Even the X Files have to take a backseat to the Twilight Zone.
True Blood has been really, really successful, despite some of its clichéd storylines. You know – hot girl meets darkly handsome but troubled blood sucker. Yada, yada, yada. However, even though I’ll be the first to admit it’s a bit cliché, I do watch it. It’s got some funny parts, not bad characters and lots of blood and gore.
My wife is currently watching this one. I know a lot of people who watch it. While it’s not terrible, I just can’t get into it as much as the other shows mentioned on the list. Something about it strikes me as childish. But what the hell, we are talking about monster shows here and the Vampire Diaries deserve a mention. It will remain on my ‘watch when I have nothing better to watch’ list.
Fringe is another wildly successful supernatural-ish show. It’s also another one I haven’t been able to fully get into. I do plan on giving it another chance once I’m done watching Being Human and Dexter.
Two Secret Service agents are corralled into finding ancient artifacts that have powers and pose a danger to society. Not a bad premise. I do think SyFy could have done a whole lot more with the storyline, but it’s not half bad. If you like Fringe, you’ll probably enjoy Warehouse 13.
Thanks goes out to Phil who kindly pointed out one of my favorite shows, Haven. I told you my memory sucks.
Haven is based on a short story by my favorite author, Stephen King. Not only that but it’s filmed in Canada. It was these two elements that got me to watch it in the first place. The show is about an FBI detective who arrives in Haven to solve a murder. She then sees a newspaper clipping of someone who looks like her. Haven is plagued by supernatural occurrences that the locals call ‘The Troubles’ and the FBI agent and her trusty local law enforcement sidekick try to solve cases and help the Troubled.
Haven may be one of the best supernatural shows on the air right now. And the lead character is super cute.
So there you have it. I know there are some shows not mentioned on the list. Some I just haven’t had the time to watch yet. Some I think suck. And others I don’t know about. So if there is a supernatural show you enjoy watching, feel free to leave it in the comment section and I’m sure I (and others) will find it useful. We supernatural TV show lovers need to stick together.
Supernatural…isn’t that a show I left off the list?
I can’t imagine why.
